Corpus Christi College Maroubra began life as a Catholic co-educational high school this year as it welcomed its first cohort of Year 7 girls.

The move has proven to be a resounding success, as the College now stands as the only Catholic co-educational high school in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs.

Corpus Christi College has always prided itself on its long tradition of providing excellence in education for boys for over 60 years, and is now excited to have entered a new era of inclusion and innovation for the region.

“I have found it very easy moving from primary to high school. It has been nice to learn from different teachers and we have a variety of different ways that we can learn” – Zoe, Year 7 student

It’s been great being able to participate in extracurricular activities together. We are both in the photography club and it’s great that we have the opportunities to do the same things” – Hayden (Year 9 student and brother of Zoe)

The school’s leadership, staff, and existing students have welcomed their new peers with open arms, creating an inclusive and supportive atmosphere that fosters learning and personal development.

“It’s a great credit to the school with the work they have put in and what they have thought about, it has been seamless. This is a great school to choose as the kids are in an environment that reflects the rest of the world. It is great to be a part of this wonderful community” – Karen (Mother of Zoe and Hayden)

There is a lot of excitement in the school community about the fresh perspectives, ideas, and experiences that new students will bring to the community.

This new dynamic is giving students the opportunity to learn and grow alongside individuals with different backgrounds and experiences while promoting a sense of understanding and respect between individuals.

A FOCUS ON STEM

One of the standout features of the transition has been the school’s unwavering commitment to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and engineering education.

By introducing STEM-based topics to Year 7 students, they are able to explore and engage in these critical fields from a young age, building pathways to innovation, problem-solving, and global competitiveness.

The school’s curriculum places a strong emphasis on hands-on learning. Students are actively involved in a wide range of projects that allow them to apply their knowledge in practical ways.

STEM education at Corpus Christi College extends beyond the conventional classroom setting. Students are active participants in clubs and extracurricular activities such as coding clubs and robotics competitions. These platforms provide a space for them to explore their interests further and collaborate with like-minded peers.

“We have gone to STEM based topics in Year 7 to engage the girls and boys and they are performing at a really high level, so as they approach stage 5, there will be a whole lot of opportunities for them in the world of engineering – Ms Bett, TAS Dept Coordinator

“In primary school we had similar opportunities but they were more online rather than to be able to create something. We have been able to do a lot more practical work, not just theory which was good as you could develop something rather than just planning so you got more of the stimulation rather than just the idea” – Marishka, Year 7 student

Corpus Christi College has truly embraced the future of education and is preparing its students for success in the ever-evolving world.
